The Raton Range and Raton Peak are located immediately north of the town. The Raton Range is a 75-mile long ridge that extends east from the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Raton Pass and the Raton Basin are also named for the Raton Range.
Raton was first used by Native Americans and Spanish explorers as a shortcut through the Rockies, and eventually it developed into a Northern New Mexico mining, railroad, and ranching outpost on the old Santa Fe Trail.
Now the city is luring visitors for walking tours of its historic downtown, a cluster of nearly 100 structures built in the classical revival style in the early-1900s. Its surroundings include one of the top state parks in the country, some of the region’s best elk and turkey hunting, and the Capulin Volcano National Monument, which preserves an excellent example of an extinct cinder cone volcano.
