Socorro New Mexico lies in the central part of the state about an hour and a half south of Albuquerque along the Rio Grande River. Socorro and Sierra County residents enjoy the small town quality of life, great climate, low cost of living, and community pride. New Mexico Tech is located in Socorro. This college focuses on science, engineering education and research. Different Tech divisions and departments include world-class research programs in hydrology, geophysics, astrophysics, atmospheric physics, explosives research, anti-terrorism technology, IT, and security. Also located on campus is the Mineral Museum with over 15,000 mineral specimens which represent one of the finest collections in the world. There is a section dedicated to New Mexico minerals and rocks which is quite fascinating. Although NM Tech appears to be all business, there’s also a great golf course associated with the school. Golf Digest magazine named this golf course to “one of the 10 best public courses in New Mexico, and one of the 500 best places you can play.”

Truth or Consequences and Elephant Butte which are located about 2 hour drive south of Albuquerque, and 120 miles north of El Paso, Texas, are also in central New Mexico. T or C which used to be called Hot Springs, does have some wonderful hot springs to enjoy. The nearby Elephant Butte is a town, but also is the name of New Mexico’s largest lake. Many people have second homes and vacation homes at Elephant Butte and enjoy the water sports, fishing, and life on the Butte. It’s a great weekend getaway for residents of New Mexico and Texas.

The Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge is a treasure along the Rio Grande River. With unique bird and wildlife viewing opportunities it attracts many visitors. Peak visits are generally in the winter when bald eagles and thousands of sandhill cranes and snow geese flock to the fields and marshes. Some visitors stay in the Socorro area so they can get up early to view the bustling morning activity at the Refuge.

About 50 miles west of Socorro you will find the VLA or Very Large Array which comprises 27 radio telescopes in a “Y” pattern spread across the plains of San Agustin. The VLA has been used by more astronomers and has been mentioned in more scientific papers than any other radio telescope in the world. It’s a great stopping off point coming or going from Arizona and worth the short visit.

The Trinity Site where the world’s first atomic bomb was detonated in 1945 is open twice a year and is in the central part of New Mexico. Open the first Saturday’s of April and October, it is worth visiting at least once. Bring a picnic lunch and make the drive.
